Health tourism is tourism primarily motivated by activities intended to support physical, mental or spiritual health. UNWTO’s 2019 definition encompasses both medical and wellness activities.[1]
The phrase has a different function in biomedical indexing. The National Library of Medicine lists it under Medical Tourism, whose definition concerns international travel for care.[2] These are documented differences in usage, rather than competing measurements of one consistently defined activity.[1][2]
Usage in medical travel
The United Nations’ International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics 2008 uses a separate trip-purpose category for health and medical care.[3] It includes treatment in medical institutions and medically advised treatment at specialized resorts.[3]
The same statistical framework places visits to wellness hotels and non-medical fitness activities within leisure and recreation.[3] Consequently, its health-and-medical-care category does not reproduce the broader UNWTO health tourism umbrella.[1][3]
Related terms
Medical tourism and wellness tourism are subtypes in the UNWTO terminology, whereas health and medical care is a statistical classification of a trip’s main purpose.[1][3] An activity undertaken during a trip is not necessarily its main purpose: the statistical recommendations assign each trip one main purpose while allowing secondary activities.[3]
