Wellness tourism is travel associated with maintaining or improving personal wellbeing, according to the Global Wellness Institute, or GWI.[1] UNWTO’s 2019 definition emphasizes preventive and lifestyle activities, including fitness, relaxation and healthy eating.[2]
Usage in medical travel
GWI distinguishes primary wellness travel, where wellbeing motivates the trip or destination choice, from secondary wellness travel, where wellness activities accompany another travel purpose.[1] The latter can occur during business or leisure travel, and the same person can fall into different categories on different trips.[1]
GWI’s measurement framework includes domestic and international travel, so its wellness tourism category does not require an international border crossing.[1] Its expenditure measure also includes accommodation, food and transport, rather than only spending on wellness services.[1]

GWI distinguishes wellness travel from travel for medical treatment while acknowledging overlap around services such as executive health examinations.[1] That overlap concerns the scope of travel activities; this entry makes no finding about the clinical effectiveness of those services.
